South Node — Symbol & Archetype
South Node — Symbol & Archetype · Dragon's Tail / Ketu / Descending Node — The Symbolic Layer
The South Node (☋) is the descending lunar node, whose symbolism across cultures points to 'what has already been held' — whether understood as past lives, inherited conditioning, or deeply internalized genius. Ketu is its Vedic name, associated with dissolution and spiritual release.
If the North Node is hunger, the South Node is satiation — everything already possessed. The symbolic layer of the South Node carries its greatest risk not in misidentification but in misuse: leveraging its feeling of familiarity and completeness to avoid growth, or mistaking fluency for arrival.

Mythological Origin: Ketu and the Dragon's Tail
Ketu is the Vedic name for the South Node — the headless body from the same severing myth as Rahu. If Rahu is unfulfilled craving, Ketu is the principle of detachment, dissolution, and purification. Associated with spiritual practice, introspection, and liberation, Ketu symbolizes what the soul has already traversed and is releasing toward a higher integration.
In Western medieval astrology, the South Node was Cauda Draconis — the Dragon's Tail, associated with descent, passage, and diminishment. Classical judgment tended to see it as subtractive in nature; modern psychological reframing interprets this 'subtraction' as the dissolution of overidentified patterns, which becomes necessary for North Node development.
The Astrological Archetype: The Backward Pole
The South Node is the backward-facing axis pole — symbolizing all that has been internalized and automatized. From a Jungian lens, it maps to a specific kind of shadow: not the 'evil shadow' but the 'automatized genius' — exceptional capacities that have become so second-nature they no longer register consciously, and whose excessive reliance prevents development of the complementary North Node territory.
Symbolic Difference from Planets
The South Node represents no currently active drive — it represents a pattern that has been active many times before. Unlike planets, it doesn't produce real-time pressure; but when conditions trigger it, it activates faster than most planets precisely because it's automatic. The South Node operates below awareness: not 'what you choose to do' but 'what you default to doing.'
Why the Symbolic Layer Gets Misread
South Node symbolic misreadings cluster at two poles:
Over-negativizing: Calling it a 'karmic burden' to be cut off ignores its genuine gifts and foundation.
Over-spiritualizing: Mistaking South Node fluency for spiritual achievement — especially tempting given Ketu's association with liberation. A South Node in Scorpio person may interpret 'world-weariness' as transcendence, when it may actually be avoidance of the Rahu-like hunger their North Node calls for.
Projections to Avoid
- Don't conflate familiarity with completion: Deep patterns feel sacred, but feeling sacred isn't the same as being integrated.
- Don't treat the South Node as karmic debt to be erased: Honor its resources — the goal is non-over-reliance, not elimination.
- Don't interpret South Node fluency as 'already done' in that area: Automatization often means the deepest questions there have never been asked, only circumvented.
Bringing the Symbolic Layer Back to Sign and House
Approach the South Node's sign and house with these questions:
• What comes effortlessly in my South Node's domain? • In what patterns do I use that effortlessness to avoid the discomfort of North Node growth? • Have I confused high fluency in this area with mastery of its deepest question?
